OMHA Playdowns: Round 1 Sucess
The Cayuga Midget Reps are heading to the Quarter Finals! After winning the dramatic series that left many without fingernails in the dying seconds of Game 6, the boys will move on the face the Norwich Nighthawks.
After splitting the first two games of the series against Embro by deciding scores of 3-0, the team was blanked again in Game 3 by a score of 4-0. "I think we were just over confident," said Eric Robertson, a coach on the Rep bench. "We had a great regular season and figured this lower placing team would be a cake walk in the early rounds. What a wake up call."
Not being able to lose another game, the Midget Reps had their backs against the wall. Game 4 would be back in Embro. Again, two hard working teams battled for every inch of ice ending this game in a 1-1 draw. Now with the series being first to six points, the boys would really need to out work the Embro squad.
A tie or loss in Game 5 would see the Midget Stars eliminated from the OMHA Playdowns. Knowing this, and having enormous fan support motivated the already fired up Stars to dominate their competition by a score of 8-1.
Forcing Game 6 was not easy, and the boys knew this would be one of the most important games they have played all year. A smaller ice surface, a smaller crowd in attendance and poor weather from the weekend would not defeat our team. Cayuga went on to win 3-2. Scoring in the remaining seconds of the game was Nathan Armstrong. Also coming through in the clutch would be Jonathan Armstrong and Nolan Bacher.
"It wasn't the usual crew of guys scoring but we'll take it," explained Darren Drehmer. "It was great to see us getting some secondary scoring from guys who work hard out there. They were finally rewarded! Heck, their hard work rewarded our entire team. I hope to see more of that scoring in the Next round."
The next round sees Cayuga pitted against another Southern Counties West Division team; the Norwich Nighthawks. Game 1 will be played in Norwich on Tuesday Feb. 12 @ 815PM.The rest of the schedule will be announced soon.
"This team feeds off crowd support. We ask that everyone come and support our team. Whether or not you have a connection to this team, Cayuga Minor Hockey, Cayuga as a town, Haldimand County, or anything; make the trips to Norwich. Make the trips to Cayuga. Our boys love the noise!" explained Robertson.
